Motivation

  • According to World Health Organization(WHO) 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 246 have low vision. About 90% of the world's visually impaired live in low-income settings. 82% of people living with blindness are aged 50 and above.According to a news of the Guardian, Bangladesh has almost 800,000 blind people (out of a population of 90 million), of whom 40,000 are children under the age of 15. Since 2004, more than 6,562 have been diagnosed with cataracts and 90% have received eye-restoring surgery. This project is specially dedicated to the people of bangladesh and also for the people all over the world. This will make their life more easier, comfortable and free to move any place

Parts of the System

  • A. Visual Impairment Aid (VIA)
  • B. Haptic Assistance for Locating Obstacles (HALO)
  • C. Braille Language Translator Gloves (BLTG)

Visual Impairment Aid (VIA)

  • Visual Impaired Aid is the main part of our total system. This is considered to be a total blind guiding stick, VIA consists of ultrasonic sensors to read the distance all around the user . A text to speech option is used to suggest the user about the distance and width of the obstacle and it suggests where to move. VIA also consists of 3 emergency voice to speech commands to tell the surrounding people to help the blind or to move aside from his path. If the blind person comes with a danger or an emergency a gsm module has been attached to send emergency messages to close peoples for helping him. When the ultrasonic sensor values comes contact with ground meaning the stick has been fallen from the hand it will echo to call a fixed number to nearby people. VIA also comes with light indicators by which nearby person can understand the presence from a long distance whether it’s day or night.

Two Levels in VIA:

Two level of sensors has been used in VIA to acquire more accurate sensing and feedback of obstacles, which also enables the device to detect the height of the obstacle in front

EMERGENCY SOS BUTTONS

  • If the blind person comes with a danger or an emergency,a gsm module has been attached to send emergency messages to close peoples for helping him .There are 3 buttons.Every button can be used to send a specific message to the person who can help in emergency. His location can be also determined and given in the text message by implementing a GPS module An alternate SOS button has been used to recover the mistake if the blind man gives any message by wrong push button. It will deliver the message that “The message which was previously given was by mistake”

EMERGENCY FLASH LIGHT FOR NIGHT USE

Emergency flash light along with cats eye has been used in the device so if a vehicle or something comes from far distance he can notice the blind man or from seeing the light or the reflection of the flashlight or vehicle’s light in the cats eye

EMERGENCY FLASH LIGHT FOR DAY USE

  • Ordinary lights cannot be seen usually in day light so laser projection light has been used in the device as day flash light to keep the blind man safe whenever a vehicle or something is coming very fast it can notice the laser proejection flash light and low down it’s speed.

Identifying the Manholes or open Suarage Lines

A sensor in the downside has also been used just infront of the stick to identify a manhole or anything like suarage lines so a blind man can be safe from those dangers, diagnosing the distance from the ground level it will buzz if the distance is excess

Automatic Accident Notification System

  • If a blind man faces an accident and the stick falls from the blind man to the ground after a sudden time it will start buzzing to notify the people around and also it will echo to call a fixed number to nearby people. A emergency message will be also sent to the specific number of the person who can come to help

Haptic Assistance for Locating Obstacles (HALO)

  • HALO is an assisting aid for blind person. The aid uses ultrasonic sensors to sense the obstacle around the person .Getting the proper distance this project will aware the user by activating haptic vibrating motors. 5 ultrasonic sensors give user a details location by vibrating the motor in left ,left mid ,mid, right mid and right position. The more the obstacle comes closer the each haptic vibrating motor vibrates more to notify the blind user about the obstacle distance in each direction

Braille Language Translator Gloves (BLTG)

  • This is 3rd phase of our project. The blind people can read with a particular pattern language which is called “Braille Language” . In this language a blind feels a certain pattern by his hand to understand the word. We have infused a regular hand gloves with vibrating motors. Braille language pattern chart for Alphabets . From this concept we have merged 6 motor as 6 point in the braille . For example when someone types a in the phone there is only one pattern , and from the concept the motor of that point will activate creating the feeling for that pattern. Thus the blind person can understand the alphabet. The features we like to add is we want to take a book and read it from the mobile and that blind person can understand the total concept with his own pattern language

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH THE BRAILLE LANGUAGE ALPHABETS

VIBRATING MOTOR POSITIONS IN THE FINGERS OF THE GLOVES

  • From the image it can be see that the vibrating motors has been set from right side fingers to left light fingers from 1-5 and the 6th motor has been set in the hand palm position

BLTG's CORRESPONDING MOTOR VIBRATION ACCORDING TO BRAILLE LANGUAGE FOR A WORD “HELLO”

Conclusion

  • In about less than 50$ cost the lifestyle of blind people can be change widely with this Blind Assistance System . Their indoor and outdoor movement and learning systems in educational institutions can be revolutionized with the benefits of this system where life will be no more difficult to them without their eyes.So industrial manufacturing of this system is now a must for the betterment of blind people where it’s manufacturing cost can be lowered down to 30$ which will reach this product to larger amount of blind people.
